John Muir Reinvention

In October 2007, the Board of Education approved the reconstitution of John Muir High School for the 2008-09 school year to improve student performance, ensure high-quality instruction, and deliver a rigorous academic program.

Reinvention Principles

The Board directed staff to redesign the school according to the following guiding principles:

  • Small, caring, relevant, rigorous and personalized learning communities
  • Powerful standards-based teaching and learning
  • Culture of continuous learning
  • Student-centered systems and safety nets
  • Youth voice is valued
  • Parents and community members are partners
  • All stakeholders are responsible and accountable for results

Small Learning Academies

Through a comprehensive, community-based planning process, John Muir High School was restructured into three career-themed academies:  Arts, Media and Entertainment, Business and Entrepreneurship, Engineering and Environmental Science, and a Freshman Academy. The smaller learning communities offer all students rigorous college-preparatory curriculum and theme-based classes to keep students engaged.

Professional Development

With a generous donation from the Pasadena Community Foundation, John Muir High School teachers participated in a summer professional development institute to focus on research-based instructional strategies. Teachers receive ongoing training and development in bi-monthly professional development sessions and through administrative coaching. Teachers also have regular opportunities to collaborate with colleagues, analyze student performance, and share strategies for success.

2008-2009 Review

As a result of the Reinvention, John Muir High School scored a 30-point increase on its Academic Performance Index in 2008, and increased the number of students attending college and obtaining scholarships.  John Muir High School administrators, teachers and students are leading the way as PUSD high schools implement the multiple pathways high school reform initiative, which will establish similar career academies throughout the District.

In the year ahead, the school will continue to accelerate improvements in student achievement, focus on parent and community involvement and remain on the cutting edge of district-wide efforts to prepare students for the college of their choice and the career of their dreams.  For a comprehensive report on the progress of the Reinvention, see the 2008-09 Year-End Review.
