Approach to Excellence
2009-2010 Priorities
PUSD will sustain its focus on improving student achievement, incorporating rigor, relevance and relationships into learning, and increasing organizational effectiveness. We will implement current initiatives effectively; use data to continuously improve performance and align to best practices; operate with a sense of urgency; invest in training to expand the capacity of staff and stakeholders; and partner with families, community and businesses to improve student outcomes.
The Board of Education has launched a strategic planning process for 2009-2010 to build a comprehensive approach to accelerate student achievement from Pre-Kindergarten through12th grade -- and beyond. The process will first focus on establishing a new vision, mission, goals and guiding values, followed by the development of a three- to five-year strategic plan with internal and external engagement. The Board has approved a working draft of the Strategic Plan, which will serve as a starting point for a comprehensive community engagement process. The draft will be modified to reflect public input and feedback before it is adopted by the Board early in 2010.
2008-09 Priorities: Approach to Excellence II
Built on the progress of the 2007 reforms, Approach to Excellence II was adopted by the PUSD Board of Education as a blueprint of strategic action in 2008-09. It reflects a narrowed focus on critical areas to improve in an environment of diminishing fiscal resources.
The 2008-09 Approach to Excellence II priorites are organized into three areas:
1. Focus on Student Achievement: Core instructional work with standards-based curriculum and teaching, assessments, and professional development. Student Achievement strategies.
2. Rigor and Relevance: Initiatives and programs aimed building the broader skills, knowledge and attitudes students must have to be college and career ready. Rigor and Relevance strategies.
3. Organization Capacity: Reforms and infrastructure investments to build the capacity of school sites, the district and the community. This includes accountability and measurement, and the alignment of resources, people, systems and technology to PUSD priorities. Organization Capacity strategies.
